The server should be certified for the operating system and database software selected. Membership in a Windows Domain is strongly recommended. A single server can serve as both the primary domain controller and the database server, however, this should not be considered in larger installations. Consult Microsoft product documentation for a complete treatment on structuring your network.
The following are supported:
- Server Operating System:
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2, 2012, 2012 R2 and 2016
Microsoft SQL Server 2008R2, 2012, 2014 and 2016
The amount of data and number of users will greatly affect the design of the server. The choices made during server selection will have a direct impact on overall system performance. Consult with a technology professional to assist with sizing of hardware and equipment selection. Proper equipment selection is the responsibility of the licensee.
The following must be evaluated by your technology professional when designing a server. Licensor’s guidelines are provided, however, these are meant to assist in the design process. This should not be interpreted as minimum requirements or fitness for a specific purpose.
Number of microprocessors
The typical pharmacy will need only a single processor. Increasing the number of processors will improve performance dramatically. If choosing a single processor server, consider choosing a server that is multi-processor capable to provide for possible pharmacy growth.
Amount of server memory
The typical selection for an average size pharmacy is 16GB. Evaluate number of concurrent users and other workstations processes, as these will have direct impact.
Amount of server disk space, and disk subsystem
Some form of disk redundancy is strongly recommended. RAID 5 should be considered for all but the smallest of installations. A caching RAID controller is also strongly recommended. Consider the size of other software that will be installed on the server when calculating disk space requirements. The Drug knowledgebases currently consumes approximately 2.0 GB of space. A utility is available from licensor that can assist in predicting the size of the application databases. Note that this is an approximation. Appropriate care should be taken to assure that disk space does not become a limiting factor for pharmacy growth.
Pharmacy needs should be considered when determining requirements for redundant hardware. Common areas of concern are the disk subsystem, server power supply, and memory.
A battery backup with proper power protection or some other form of backup power is strongly recommended for all servers on the network.
